Where do you draw the line between self defense and assault? Or is it all just the same to you, violence? When people think of violence, they think of something dirty, messy, and wrong. Even though we know it’s wrong, people tend to turn to it to solve their problems. You can find it in your everyday life, the use of violence to get what you want or solve a simple problem easier. The simple answer to why this is is that people can be so greedy and selfish. When you go into the store and you pick up a chocolate bar, there is a high chance that child labor was used to make the cocoa. Children are forced to work long days and can be as young as six. Every year this town holds a deadly lottery, whoever wins is stoned to death by the other villagers. It is implied that this is to ensure a great harvest for the town that year. Basically, this murder acts like a safety net. It makes them feel secure that they have luck on their side. For them, a human life is worth that feeling. They don’t care that she died slow, painful, and alone, their desire to feel secure is worth more to them. You may have heard of the case of Junko Furuta, it’s a story that has scared many people and for good reason. The short version of this case is that Junko rejected a boy, and his three other friends then kidnapped her and tortured her in unspeakable ways for forty-four days. She passed after a boy lost a game and took his anger out on her. She passed away after two hours of vicious torture, when the boys hid her body in a barrel and filled it with cement. Junko was seventeen years old when this happened to her, her kidnappers were sixteen to eighteen years old. This act of violence was all because he couldn’t handle being told no.
