In the novel, The Windup Girl, Paolo Bacigalupi showcase the rape culture through the mistreatment of Emiko, the windup girl. The story takes place in Bangkok, Thailand in the 23rd century, after climate change has flooded and completely wiped out many other nations. The world’s population has been greatly reduced due to plagues and starvation. Additionally, carbon fuel sources have become depleted, and manually wound springs are now being as energy storage devices. Thailand remains standing, even when deep below sea level, because of the levees and pumps protecting the country from water flooding in. Biotechnology is dominant in society, and multinational "calorie" companies, such as AgriGen, PurCal and RedStar, create genetically modified food products to withstand plagues. Emiko is not human; she is an engineered test tube human being, identified as the New People, who is programmed to serve humans. Emiko is an artificial life form who was engineered to serve people with any service. It was taken to extreme when she is abused harshly her being less human. Emiko became a sex slave to be raped, molested and toyed with for the sole purpose of entertainment for men. Though as an individual, Emiko still has her own feelings and emotions towards everything. Emiko despises how she is treated, however; she does not have the power to fight it. Engineered to not disobey, her will to serve others defeats her inner will, resulting in her body betraying herself. Bacigalupi showcases Emiko’s emotions to imply that the rape culture should never be allowed. Even after the world has been nearly destroyed, changing how society functions; even when beings are created for the purpose of slavery, even when human trafficking is permitted, rape is something that can never be
