In nursing school, we are taught to learn about culture consideration but we can only remember so many since there are a lot of different cultures out there. One way I think that can help to have a better understanding regarding different culture is having an online class for it. In Children Hospital they offer different classes through Powerpoint for nurses that want to have a better understanding about certain topic. At the end of the class, there will be a quiz for you to take to pass the class. With these classes, you can take it whenever you want and by simply logging into your work account.
The CLPNBC Professional Standards relates to culturally safe nursing in many ways, specifically in the fourth professional standard which is labeled Ethical Practice. Principles and values at the workplace include providing equal rights to each and every individual, maintaining confidentiality at the workplace, protecting the clients from any kind of abuse and harm; having own cultural beliefs and experience helps the person to make sure that it could provide better and effective services to the services users. In nursing school, students were introduced to the idea of cultural competence. It is a concept that I am familiar with due to my cultural background. The most important issue that is needed to be resolved is the cultural competence. Cultural competence exists in all the organisations and this increases the efficiency of organisations. Similarly, this has become a major factor in the health care system of US hospitals. However, the selection of this clinical issue has been made because of the severely negative impacts of cultural competence, which are increasing with the passage of time.
When assessing this Asian American, nurses should be aware of this client’s cultural attitudes, biases and assumptions. Madeline Leininger’s Cultural Care Diversity and Universality Theory, deals with the impact of culture on health and healing. In health care today, a nurse must deal with people from many backgrounds, cultures, and ethnic origins. Transcultural nursing is practiced throughout nursing when caring for people from different cultures. The purpose of Leininger’s theory is to produce knowledge related to nursing care of people from diverse nationalities, who value their ethnic heritage and culture. Leininger’s theory recognized and understood cultural differences and similarities while caring for patients of different backgrounds.
Cultural education and awareness are key factors in providing respectful care to our patients. Being aware of differences in forms of communication, beliefs about life and death, and being able to accept and show respect for traditions that may not be our own will all come through continuing our education as nurses. We must remain vigilant to our patients and their families, noticing just how giving of ourselves and our time we are. With a Native American family, tone and body language can completely override the words that are spoken. Cultural competency: Indians Culture competency is defined as one has the knowledge, the abilities and the skill to deliver care congruent with the patient’s cultural beliefs and practices (Purnell, 2013). As a nurse or a health care provider, increasing ones consciousness of culture diversity improves the possibilities for health care practitioners to provide competent care (Purnell, 2013). One of the skills/strategy I learned in my college course is ‘’Cultural Competence’’ and this skill helped in gaining the knowledge about culture in that particular organization in which I was working with. Cultural competency has real impacts on clinical outcomes. I have developed cultural competency during this course in order to provide proper care and education to people with diabetes. As I applied this skill/strategy with the diabetic people, I learned that their understanding was more recognized. Their nutrition is defined by the culture and environment they live in and I also found that they are habitual to things like that.
