In the beginning of the story, it started to talk about how Millicent was chosen to join the sorority, although her friend was not chosen. Then in the middle of the story Millicent started to do all these crazy tasks so she can prove that she wanted to join the sorority to us those tasks showed that she really wanted to join and that she was determined to become one of them. Towards the end of the story, Millicent started to think what does the sorority give her that she can 't acquire it herself, then when the final day arrived to be initiated she decided to not join so she could be with her friends, we thought that Millicent did the right thing by not joining the sorority, and by becoming herself and not another sorority girl controlled by
At Western Michigan University, there are many micro-cultures. One particular micro-culture I want to belong to is a sorority by the name of Delta Sigma Theta, incorporated. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded on January 13, 1913, 103 years ago, by 22 collegiate women at Howard University to promote academic excellence and provide assistance to those in need. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is the largest African-American Greek-lettered organization.
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was founded on November 12, 1922 in Indianapolis, Indiana by seven school teachers. Their colors are Royal Blue and Gold. The Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority aims to enhance the quality of life within the community. Public service, leadership development, and resources toward removing barriers and inequalities so that all people of America may develop their potential and exercise full citizenship (Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.,2016).
A weakness of selecting certain sorority members based on the author’s discretion holds bias because of its convenient sampling. Robbins’ selection of particular participants may not fully represent the population, even though Robbins indicated that one of the sorority members would be a positive representative of the national organization. In addition, the participants are only from one institution and a small sample size. Robbins’s lack of details of her methodology of how she obtained their experiences and not using real names or locations to conceal her sources' identities lacks credibility. In addition, this challenges higher education professionals can do to solve these issues of superficial values and dangerous practices, especially since all sorority houses tend to have different reputations on different
I am definitely a fan of the arts, in my spare time I love to listen to music. I also write, cook, engage in healthy debates, read and spend quality time with my loved ones. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has celebrated 103 years of excellence. After meeting and getting to know women of the sorority, conducting research and growing into a young African American woman, I have come to the conclusion that Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is the sorority for me. The mission statement really speaks volumes to me, not only are college educated women a part of the sorority, but the primary focus is the Black community.
Throughout the handout a former Kappa Fraternity President gives her interpretation of the purpose, values, and standards of Kappa Kappa Gamma. It is discussed how our standards help each of us know who and where we are. Kappa provides an opportunity to live and work together, and a constant chance for self-renewal. Kappa standards are defined and redefined by each member through the years in their lives as undergraduates and alumnae. The former president listed our vows taken when initiated, starting with “I will avoid injuring the name of Kappa Kappa Gamma . .”
Can you imagine what your life would be like if you hadn’t decided to join Phi Mu Delta? What life lessons, friendships, and memories would you have missed out on? Many brothers showed their love for the fraternity by sharing all the reasons they cherish their membership. These are the stories that remind us just how important the fraternity is and prove
Although our organization’s extensive history of academic accomplishment, the previous year was particularly one in terms of academic improvement. At the start of the 2016 year, our fraternity’s Academic Committee, led by our organization’s Vice President of Development, implemented new academic policies and helped modify academic improvement plans for each individual member. We believe the changes to the new academic policies will help us improve our GPA. The improvement plans set for each member focused on
As a soror, of Alpha Nu Multicultural Sorority Incorporated, I take pride in my ability to accomplish my responsibilities as a student, school employee, and community member. I am currently a self-empowered PhD student, and am nominating myself for the White Orchid scholarship. My funding resources are limited, as I currently hold a regulated assistantship with my department, and strongly believe that I would be an excellent candidate for this award. I graduated from Washington State University, with my undergrad degree in 2016. While an undergraduate member of Alpha Nu, I was actively involved in various ways within our organization and community.
Fraternities and sororities have been around for over a century and have essentially become an integral part of the collegiate experience. However, negative stereotypes and poor conduct of individual chapters hinder Greek-letter organization’s ability to successfully grow and develop in the present time. As well, individual members of Greek-letter organizations far too often find themselves dealing with unfortunate events.
While this fraternity provides a social environment, it also provides a community where members can feel comfortable and respected. In addition to its strong sisterhood, Alpha Phi is one of the only sororities that has its own philanthropic
To the women of the grad chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Incorporated: The purpose of this letter is to inform you of my interest in becoming a member of the grad chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Incorporated. My desire to inspire young men and women and make a significant impact on their lives is just one of many reasons I aspire to join your great sorority. While growing up at a young age my mom worked out of my sibling lives. I did not have many positive female role models I could look to for guidance in different situations.
As the new face of the governing body for all sorority chapters at Lafayette, it was my responsibility to take action. After compiling critiques from the greater Lafayette community and observations of my own, I realized that Greek Life as a whole was a deeply flawed system in need of reform. Perhaps the most obvious flaw with Greek Life is that it was built on the foundations of exclusivity with limited focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. Greek organizations have historically maintained strict membership criteria catering to white, straight, cisgender, and affluent students, thus creating divisions on campuses and alienating individuals who do not fit said criteria. While Greek Life can create a sense of camaraderie and belonging for members, it is imperative to ensure that these organizations abandon their roots in exclusivity and continue to evolve as inclusive spaces.
By active community service, leadership roles, and hard work, I have learned the incredible importance of academic achievement, character, leadership, and service. Through these things, I have been substantially prepared by the Beta Club to serve others as I depart high school and
