In the first test tube, 0.023 grams of 1-aspirin was used. In the second test tube, 0.028 grams of 2-acetaminophen was used. In the third test tube, 0.022 grams of the 3-unknown was used. In the fourth test tube, 0.028 grams of 4-caffeine was used and finally, in that last test tube, 0.031 grams of ibuprofen was used. The Unknown number for this experiment was 4. In the first TLC Plate, the three compounds were 1-aspirin, 2-acetaminophen, and the third was the unknown. The first TLC plate had a Dsolvent of 5.0 cm. 1-aspirin had a Dspot of 4.0 cm. The Rf value for 1-aspirin was 0.80. The spot was medium sized and was a light greyish color. When dissolved in methanol, the solution was now a clear color. The spot has a little circular, oval …show more content…

In this experiment, thin layer chromatography will be used to identify an unknown proprietary drug. From the results, the conclusion can be made that the Unknown drug given was Excedrin. Excedrin contains acetaminophen, caffeine, and aspirin and from our results these three compounds were present in the unknown sample given. The unknown was determined from the results on the TLC plate. The unknown forms three spots. From the first plate, 1-aspirin forms one spot and 2-acetaminophen also forms one spot, but both of these spots are aligned across with the spots of the unknown. Also, on the second plate, 4-caffeine forms only one spot and this spot is also aligned across with one of the spots on the unknown. The spot formed from 1-aspirin lines across the spot of the 3-unknown that is on the top, near the solvent front. The spot formed from 2-acetaminophen lines across the spot of the 3-unknown that is in the middle. The spot formed from 4-caffeine lines across the spot of the 3-unknown that is on the bottom near the solvent origin. The spots formed that are aligned across the spots of the unknown shows that those compounds are in the unknown which helps in determining the unknown …show more content…

The one spot formed from 1-aspirin has an Rf value of 0.80. The Rf value of the first spot that is on the top near the solvent front is 0.78. These two Rf values are very close showing that the unknown contains aspirin. The one spot formed from 2-acetaminophen has an Rf value of 0.66. The Rf value of the middle spot on the first TLC plate is 0.64. These two Rf values are very close showing that the unknown also contains acetaminophen. The one spot formed from 4-caffeine has an Rf value of 0.26. The Rf value of the third spot on the second TLC plate located on the bottom near the solvent origin is 0.24. These two Rf values are very close showing that the unknown also contains caffeine. These three compounds make the drug Excedrin. This shows that Excedrin is our Unknown. Also, the spot of the Ibuprofen has an Rf value of 0.96 which is not close to any of the Rf values for the Unknown showing that the Unknown does not contain Ibuprofen. Also, the spots of the aspirin, acetaminophen, and caffeine are a little similar in the color and shape of the spots for the Unknown. The 1-aspirin has a similar light greyish color spot like the spot of the unknown that is on the top near the solvent front. The 2-acetaminophen has a similar darker greyish color like the spot of the unknown that is in the middle. It is also almost similar in size. The 4-caffeine has a similar greyish color spot like the spot of the
