On a warm day in New York City in 1911, tragedy struck. It was an incident that would be written up in newspapers across the country; a horrendous incident that would change legislature, labor laws and hundreds of lives forever. This dreadful event left nearly 150 girls and women dead, and became one of the most murderous fires in the history of New York City. The day was March 26, 1911, and the fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory was an historic one.
The artwork Untitled: Four Etchings by Glenn Ligon contains an immense amount of depth and symbolism using Zora Neale Hurston’s famous depiction of her relationship with racism. In his piece, Ligon utilizes a unique style of texture through his portrayal of the noteworthy phrase “ I do not always feel colored… ... I feel most colored when I am thrown against a sharp white background,” (Hurston). As one looks from the top of the image down, there is an extremely noticeable transition in the texture of the words from clear, smooth letters into letters that are blurry and smeared.
As I engage this unit’s Read and Attend assignments, I find that my understanding of plagiarism is not as fully developed as I had previously thought. Our Unit 3 Attend assignment shares that “in a general sense plagiarism may be caused by carelessness” and these circumstances frequently precipitate the lack of care required while writing (Bethel University, 2014, p. 11). The academic integrity tutorial provided additional information which I found valuable as well. Common themes within each unit assignment provide strands of continuity, while assisting with a more comprehensive understanding. It is my opinion, the type of plagiarism that is hardest for me to avoid is “plagiaphrasing”, also known as “lazy paraphrasing” (Bethel University, 2014, p. 12).
Holly Hassel and Jessica Lourey are English professors at their respective universities. In the second paragraph of the essay they posed a question that shapes this essay: “How do we teach our students to be accountable for their educational choices and performances? To answer their hypothesis, they took a survey of one thousand and ninety-five students total. The surveyed included questions about the meaning of each letter grade, perceptions of teacher/ student relationships and how many hours should be spent studying per three credit hour class. Ninety-three percent of students rated themselves responsible, thirty-nine percent of students had missed three or more days of class at the tenth week of the semester.
The story “Pencil Crayons” by Robert Currie, is about Josh who live with his parents in a farm far away from the town. Frank Gannon captured the point concerning absence of proof reading in his piece English 99: Literacy among the Ruins by allowing the audience to visualize the decline of writing skills among youths in his college class. Gannon begins the piece by describing to the audience his new position as a college “philosopher” educating college students that were unable to learn in a higher-level English class due to the automatic assumptions that the students would be “overly challenged” (Gannon 215). As any individual would, the students in the class began to assemble into their own groups: “the bored looking girls, the jocks and the Bosnian refugees” (Gannon 216).
In her article “Unconscious Plagiarism,” Rachel Tool describes how she experienced been plagiarized by unmeant from her friends and her students. Also she might use other people’s ideas by accident. She told her students that famous writers sometimes steal other famous writer’s ideas or writing structures because they want to build their tension and use fluid transitions. Long time ago, lots of students use rote memorization when they learning how to write, and students just re-transcribe what they learned from other people. In Chapter 19 of The Blank Slate, Steven Pinker discusses children which is one of his hot button topics. Pinker opens with a discussion on the nature-nurture debate - a debate pinning biology and environment against each other.
