Thomas Edison once said, “Tomorrow is my exam, but I don’t care because a single sheet of paper can’t decide my future.” Thomas Alva Edison is a world famous inventor and an incredible visionary. Edison revolutionized our everyday way of life. By inventing everything from the lightbulb to a magnetic iron ore separator, Edison’s profound impact will never be forgotten.

Edison was born in Milan, Ohio on February 11, 1847. Born to Samuel Ogden Edison Jr. and Nancy Matthew Elliott, Edison was the youngest child of seven. Receiving very few months of formal school as a child, his mother taught him basic writing, reading, and arithmetic. He continued this career until 1868 when he began to transfer careers into an inventor. The first patent he received was on an electric voice recorder, intended to be used in Congress. It was an absolute bust, from that point forward Edison resolved to only invent things the public would use. In 1869, he moved to New York City and continued invented useful items. One of his great inventions was a Universal Stock Printer which he was paid $40,000 for, equivalent to $78,000 today. Edison decided to move to Newark, New Jersey in 1871 and set up his first manufacturing facility. He ran this plant until 1876, when he sold it and decided to move the whole family to Menlo Park, New York City. It was at his new plant in Menlo Park that he invented the phonograph resulting in international fame. Due to his inventions success former President Rutherford B. Hayes invited Edison to the White House to demonstrate his invention in April 1878. Then, he began to work towards revolutionizing incandescent lighting systems. He was incredibly successful and ended up forming Edison General Electric in 1889. After drawing in multiple investors, Edison changed the company’s name to General Electric.
