In the four books, Thousand Pieces of Gold, Novice to Master, Into the Wild, and Enrique’s Journey all the characters had to deal with certain incidents. For example, they may have to deal with ideas, people, places, and even themselves. The situations the characters face, may be good or bad but ultimately they will learn something new about people, themselves, a place, and the world. In a Thousand Pieces of Gold, Lalu is fortunate enough to know Charlie where she eventually finds love, marriage, and happiness. In Novice to Master, Soko Morinaga realizes the meaning of the word courage. In Into the Wild, Chris McCandless comes to terms with the true meaning of the word happiness. Morinaga realizes many things when becoming a master, one being the true meaning of the word courage. In order to realize this, he would have to leave the temple where he was staying and try to be accepted into another temple. This temple is called Daitokuji Monastery, where it is an incredibly difficult and long process in order to be allowed into the temple. While awaiting to be accepted into this temple, he found the genuine meaning of the word “courage”. He believes it means, “to sustain and carry out the original intention . . . is real courage” (Morinaga, p73). Morinaga explains that one must endure hardships, until they achieve what they sought out to do. Not only did he realize what courage meant, he realized what enlightenment meant. He realized that enlightenment is in fact a starting point rather than an ending point. The starting point of enlightenment is happiness. One must be confident in their true self in order to find happiness in themselves. He understands enlightenment when he becomes a master. If he had not looked into the becoming a Buddhist master, he would not have understood the meaning of courage and
