The “Outsiders” made me think about the rules that groups give us are strongly founded on what they see as defiance. It made me think that some rules are given within a group are not remotely necessary and that we as a society are to blame for what is deemed as “socially acceptable”. Deviants may not even be actually deviants but that’s what they are labeled by society because they think, what the deviant did was wrong, which could be made up by what society thinks is okay behavior. The relation to this reading and the sociology course shows how society controls us and how they consider we should act. It reminded me of how society tells us as women that showing off our body parts is deemed as trashy and not lady like, but men can do so without
Finally, the three sociological perspectives can be seen. Functionalist can be observed in the way
In sociology, there are three theoretical perspectives; symbolic interactionism, functional analysis and conflict theory. The major point of symbolic interactionism is to use symbols to help understand how we as a society view the world, and how we communicate with one another. In functional analysis, the major point is to look at society as a whole, constructed of various parts, or groups, that all have their own function. Lastly, conflict theory is the opposite of functional analysis. In this perspective, society is viewed as different groups, each competing for power, or dominance.
The sociological perspective encourages us to explore societies’ problems from a non-biased perspective. When investigating controversial issues it is quintessential to keep one’s opinion out of the equation. As C. Wright Mills stated in his 1959 essay “The Promise”, “Problems and their solutions don’t just involve individuals; they also have a great deal to do with the social structures in our society” (Leon-Guerrero, 2015). Eliminating personal experiences and self-perception creates an even playing field to determine fact from fiction.
I appreciate how the author of Discover Sociology Christian Partin defines a theoretical framework. That it is a philosophical position for asking certain kinds of question about society and its people (2015). To develop some answers and comprehensive understanding, each sociology founder had a different view and debated on three major theoretical perspectives which are symbolic interactionist perspective, functionalist perspective, and the conflict perspective. The symbolic interactionist perspective is a social interaction where people read meanings when interacting, especially during a verbal conversation with spoken words as the symbols.
There are three main sociological perspectives, conflict, functionalist, and interactionist. I am focusing on the functionalist perspective because I agree with it the most. The definition according to the Merriam Webster dictionary is, “A theory that stresses the interdependence of the patterns and institutions of a society and their interaction in maintaining cultural and social unity” (Merriam-Webster). In more simple words it means that all parts of society come together and provide social order in one way or another. All things good and bad contribute to the social order and functioning of society.
When viewing the world with a sociological view, each person sees a different view. One may see a world in a conflict theory perspective, in a structural functionalism perspective, or a symbolic interactionism perspective. Each perspective gives the sociological view of how the earth runs and survives. With multiple perspectives of the world, those views are what cause one’s actions and stem their beliefs. Throughout the world, there are the three main perspectives of how one must live in which that many fight and choose to believe.
1)In what ways can sociology help us attain perspective about things we don’t understand? Sociology can help us gain perspective by using theories to guide our exploration. Theories involve constructing abstract interpretations that can be used to explain a wide variety of situations. Theory helps researchers frame a question and then facts are need to support the theory. What are some of the limitations of a sociological perspective?
Sociologists argue that the sociological perspective gives them the ability to make significant contributions toward an understanding of human social behavior. A theorist from the structural-functionalism perspective in a college classroom would observe the characteristics that creates a classroom as whole. The theorist would observe the students as an induvial that are focused towards a common goal. That end goal willing to get educated and attain a degree. If this was not the case there would not be a functioning classroom.
One basic sociological concept is groups. A social group, as defined by sociologists, is simply a collection of people who interact with each other. This could include a tribe, a town, or a group of coworkers. A primary group is an intimate group that interacts by direct, face-to-face communication, such as a family or close friend. A secondary group relies on rules to enforce behaviour and is highly impersonal.
1. The two sociological perspectives that I will be writing about are conflict theory and symbolic interactionism. There are two conflict theories of a social problem Marxist Conflict theory and Non-Marxist Conflict theory. The importance of using social perspective when studying the Marxist and Non-Marxist conflict theories allows individuals a better understanding of the conflicts we face in average life such as class inequality, alienation, and conflicts in competing values in social groups.
a. Sociology is the study of the social relationships that affect the humans as well as institutions. It involves many fields of study that include crime, religion, family, race, culture and society among others. It is the primary purpose of sociology to provide linkage to all of these different subjects to help in understanding how humans behave (Smith, 2016). b. Sociological enquiry is the careful analysis of the motivational factors as well as the behavior of a certain individual within a particular group of people. The primary objective of sociological inquiry is to reveal an understanding of the social world that is readily observable.
While studying sociology, every individual will have a distinct perspective and depending on the particular subject, not everyone will have the same viewpoint on the topic at hand. With this, Sociology consists of many different approaches, commonly known as “Sociology theories” These theories are distinctive and diverse, providing a different perspective for understanding different situations in society. With there being a wide variety of approaches such as “Feminist,” “Labelling,” and “Critical,” for instance, the top three major approaches representing Sociology are, “Structural Functionalism,” “Conflict Theory,” and “Symbolic Interactionism.” This paper will be comparing the differences and similarities between “Structural-Functionalism” approach and the “Symbolic Interactionism” approach. To start
Classical sociological theories are theories with ambition and great scope that either created in the early 1800s and 1900s in Europe. There were many sociological theorists such as Herbert Spencer, Emile Durkheim, Max Weber, Vilfredo Pareto, Auguste Comte, Karl Marx was important in its Time and have played a significant role in the subsequent growth and development of sociology. According to the origins of British Sociology, the market economy is a source of order, positive force, integration and harmony in society. According to Jackson (2014), there was a small elite inevitably dominates society on the grounds of enlightened self-interest. On the other hand, the anomie, considered out of any specific social context, refers to the problems
According to the Dictionary, Sociology is defined as the study of the development, structure, and functioning of human society. This means that people are willing to study social problems throughout the world and the society that they live in. In my life, I deal with my social class, Gender, Race, Religion, and the time I was born. Because of who I am, I definitely have been a part of a different upbringing and lifestyle that many sociologist may find interesting.
