Commissioned in September of 1974, Three Mile Island (TMI) is an island located in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania host to one of sixty-one nuclear power plants currently operational in the U.S. TMI is host of two nuclear reactors which are used to create energy for households, businesses, schools, etc. This energy is created through the process of splitting atoms (fission) in order to create extreme heat inside a nuclear reactors’ core. This heat forces water in the reactor to turn into steam, and this steam pushes turbines creating energy. Nuclear energy has been a major mean of energy production in America since the 1950s.
