Since 1972, when Jack Kirsch opened the FBI’s behavioral science unit, criminal profiling has been used effectively to catch suspects and serial killers when their is little evidence at the crime scene to assist investigators in finding the perpetrator. A serial killer is a killer who claims multiple victims over the course of days, weeks, or even months. Serial killers often have a motive for the excessive killings and a signature style and reason for the selection and execution of their victims. The behavioral science unit has developed techniques to create profiles that are based off of previous offenders, and while not certain, they are accurate enough to give some insight into who the killer is. When studying and profiling serial killers, it is of use to look at the types of criminals that were concluded by Cesare Lombroso. The three types of killers include born criminals, those who are said to have been a criminal from birth and are inevitably noted to commit violent crimes, insane criminals, those who are said to psychological disorders that lead them to feel the urge to commit such crimes, and lastly there is criminaloids, the criminals who are most likely driven by some sort of mental or emotional state or condition. There is also multiple types of serial killers, including thrill seeking killers, power seeking killers, visionary or lustful killers, missionary killers, as well as disorganized and organized killers. Beverly was an overweight, aggressive child that experienced munchausen’s syndrome, a mental condition that causes a person to act as if they are physically sick or injured in order to attract desired attention for themselves, the disease cause Allitt to inflict injuries upon herself and to seek unnecessary medical attention until she began training as a nurse. As an adult Allitt was a loner and when she did have relationships they were often aggressive, one boyfriend testified that she was a liar and had claimed she had raped her while they were dating. Allitt dropped out of high school at sixteen and applied at Grantham college to train as a nurse, during her training, it was reported she acted out of control at times and very strange at others as she would smear human feces on the walls or be absent for weeks at a time. After she completed her training in 1991, Beverly became a nurse at Grantham and Kesteven Hospital where she worked night shifts in the children’s ward where all of her crimes began. In February of 1991, Beverley Gail Allitt claimed her first victim, a seven month old male who was admitted into the hospital with an infection. Allitt was assigned to care for the child, during the night the child suffered and died of heart failure due to lack of oxygen, during the crisis the emergency alarms failed to go off, later it was found out
