Why golf is one of the hardest sports As Tiger Woods once said, “No matter how good you get, you can always get better.” Tiger Woods is one of the greatest golfers of all time. From a young age, he put in a lot of work, time, effort, and energy to get where he is today. Same with every professional golfer. Even being the greatest of all time, he even says that you can not perfect the game of golf and no one ever will. When the greatest of all time is saying that not even he can perfect the sport that he plays for a living, then you know its hard. Golf is probably the most mentally challenging sport due to the fact that it requires focus, concentration, and mental toughness for a full 5 hour round. For an elite golfer, they have to be in tip-top shape mentally. As Gary Player has said, “A strong mind is one of the key components that separates the great from the good.” In golf, you need to be mentally sharp by constantly thinking about the next shot, distance, club to use, layout of the hole, and weather/wind for each shot. You need to be laser-focused and locked in for the full 5 hours. If you are only tough through the first half, you can easily fall behind the field in that second half. Golf is a game about who is the most mentally tough and who can overcome the mental challenges the best. Hale Irwin put it best when he said, “You can talk all about strategy but what really matters is resiliency”. If you have a bad shot in the match and you get down on yourself and start getting emotional, you will have an even worse shot. Plenty of golfers have “choked” during tournaments due to not being mentally resilient.
