In the sixties America had a strong sense of automotive superiority. American opinion on foreign cars was that they were not as good as theirs, when it came to Japanese cars they felt they were cheap and a poor imitation of other cars. America was making cars big and expensive. The cars detroit made were unreliable and weight a lot and big engines, this was countered by japan as they made small cars that were reliable and made the most of their smaller engines. The perfect example is the Toyota Corolla from 1968, who in America would have thought then that as of 2016 the Toyota Corolla would have sold at least 363,000 in America. The pacer was plagued with disaster from the start, it was made with the goal of making a small car like a big car. They did this by having a short car that was wide, the pacer also has large windows giving it an amazing view and a feel that others cars did not. However for all the things AMC did right they also did things wrong, this is why the car was inevitably killed by its competitors. For starters the engine was planned from the beginning to be a rotary engine, however after other companies including chevrolet and the pioneers in the field Mazda experienced issues with the engine it was decided they wouldn't put it in the car. This was decided just before production meaning there car meant to save the company did not have an engine, this forced them to cram there straight six engine under the hood by fiddling with the engine to make it fit.
