Authors in this article asserted the position of American Nurses Association (ANA) in addressing disparities in the health care system. Because there is a social contract between the nursing profession and society, nurses continue to strive to fit the profession in meeting the public health care needs. Aware of the social change and multi-cultural presence in the United States, ANA appointed 40 expert nurses to revise the 2010 nursing scope and practice to include the cultural competency aspects. The result was the addition of the Standard 8: Culturally Congruent Practice.
Expressing this cultural safety can be demonstrated through empathy. When patients feel like there care is showed through their personal culture they will receive a “sense of security” (Kanchana & Sangamesh, 2016) because they will have a sense of acknowledgement showed through a LPNs use of their empathy. Another example of demonstrating cultural safety is through being aware of the differences in cultures. Knowing and understanding this will allow you to develop a care plan that is patient specific that follows all of the requirements that the individuals culture may require. Realizing that all your patients have individualized “various cultural differences” (Kanchana & Sangamesh, 2016) is a vital role every LPN must be able to recognize and perform.
In nursing school, students were introduced to the idea of cultural competence. It is a concept that I am familiar with due to my cultural background. Being respectful and aware of the beliefs and values of other traditions cannot be neglected and ignored. We are all global citizens that hold different views and perspectives, therefore leaders must equip themselves with the understanding that people expect and will act differently based on their cultural beliefs.

Transcultural nursing is practiced throughout nursing when caring for people from different cultures. The purpose of Leininger’s theory is to produce knowledge related to nursing care of people from diverse nationalities, who value their ethnic heritage and culture. As of this time, we have addressed the issues of disparities in healthcare that have been lingering amongst us for a few centuries. We have also touched on the topic of competencies in the healthcare system as well. In life the will always be something with an issue, now, let’s discuss the solutions. First, let’s just do a quick recap of the ‘issues’ we are addressing that are the reasons we are discussing a few solutions. One of the most integral parts of cultural competency is the process of successfully becoming culturally competent. After synthesizing available research on the topic I have constructed four main steps in becoming culturally competent. Those include self-awareness, understanding various aspects of the culturally diverse population for whom you care for, practice evidence based medicine as it relates to culturally diverse populations and continuing education (Kodjo, 2009; Purnell, 2012). The first step includes becoming self aware of one’s own beliefs.
