The Dallas News presented the article “Transgender policy altered after uproar in Fort Worth schools.” According to this article, students’ parents from Fort Worth’s schools will have to be aware that their children are dealing with gender identity.
The Transgender policy was adopted by schools in 2011 and it did not establish the need for parental awareness about their children gender identification and the need for accommodations for it. The Transgender policy received support from the LGBT community that stated that it “intends to safeguard those who are more vulnerable to bullying and threats.” According to the district policy, students were allowed to use bathrooms they felt safe accordantly with their gender identification without the need for communicating their parents or their legal guardians about their gender identity. This idea is characterized by the “garbage can model” that disconnects the participants involved in a particular problem and possible solutions for it (in this case, students and parents). According to the policy update, the request for special accommodations due gender identity will need to come from parents in order to be considered. Parents and the transgender students will need to meet with a counselor or school administrator together to discuss the best accommodation option. The updated guidelines are an attempt to clarify the situation and define accommodations needed on a case-by-case basis for each student.
