Troy Aikman: “The Godfather” An athlete always has to be determined to persevere and keep practicing. A prime example of that is a well-known quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys: Troy Aikman. He had a terrible rookie season in the NFL, but he clung to his father’s words to him when he was a fullback in eighth grade: “Troy, I won’t let you be a quitter. If you don’t want to play next year, fine, but once you start something you finish it. Finish the season.” (Aikman 14) Did Aikman give up when he lost all eleven games he played in? When his family moved, he thought that his life was over and that the move had cost him his pro baseball dreams (Aikman 11). However when Aikman gave Henryetta a chance, he found out that “small towns have a slower pace than cities.” He also found out that it was easy to make new lasting friends like Daren Lesley (Aikman 13). He said at a later date, “If we had stayed in California I’m sure I would have pursued a baseball career. I was pretty good, but who knows how far I would have gone.” Later that summer, his dad asked his son to sign up for the football team. “I wasn't going to play, but football was his favorite sport. If he hadn't said anything, I'm convinced I wouldn't have played football that year, probably would not have played football again. Not wanting to disappoint him, I went down to the same field house that's here today and signed up,” Aikman said at a later date, but that choice might have changed Aikman’s very future from a baseball career to a football career
