Diabetes Diabetes can strike anyone, from any walk of life. In 2012, 29.1 million Americans had diabetes. Approximately 1.25 million America children and adults had type 1 diabetes. Diabetes in a very serious disease. With my family having a history of this disease we take it very seriously and don’t joke around with it. Diabetes is a group of diseases that affect how your body uses blood sugar (glucose). Glucose is vital to your health because it’s an important source of energy for the calls that make up your muscles and tissues. It’s also your brain’s main source of fuel. There are different types of diabetes: type 1, type 2, and even gestational diabetes. Type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes, is an autoimmune disease where the pancreas produces very little insulin or no insulin at all. Insulin is a hormone produces in the pancreas by the islets of Langerhans that regulates the amount of glucose in the blood. The lack of insulin causes a form of diabetes. Various factors may contribute to Type 1 diabetes, including genetics and exposure to certain viruses. Although Type 1 diabetes usually appears during child-hood or adolescence, it also can begin in adults. Despite ongoing research, Type 1 diabetes has no cure.
