Type 2 Diabetes Career Development Plan

1250 Words5 Pages

My goal is to become a leader in interventions for the treatment and prevention of type 2 diabetes. I have made progress in developing my skills, but there are four areas where I require additional training:
(1) diabetes, insulin resistance, nutrition, and clinical experience,
(2) advanced study design and biostatistical methodology,
(3) theories of health behavior change and maintenance,
(4) using technology to support behavioral interventions.
In the following section, I present a detailed career development plan designed to enable me to acquire the training and mentored research experience I need to address these deficiencies and compete successfully for R01 funding, thereby achieving independence as a clinical investigator. I have carefully …show more content…

Although I have immersed myself in the research in this area over the past several years, I have little formal training in diabetes, insulin resistance, nutrition, and clinical care for type 2 diabetes. Training will include endocrinology and nutrition classes, attendance and presentations at conferences, and mentorship around current research. As I am not a clinician, it is critical for me to gain a better understanding of how type 2 diabetes is currently treated, from both the perspective of the physician and patient. My training goals in this area are to: (a) acquire competence in the biological processes underlying diabetes, insulin resistance, and related diseases; (b) learn the literature on the link between nutrition and diabetes; (c) acquire experience in current clinical care for type 2 diabetes; and (d) use my deeper understanding of diabetes, insulin resistance, nutrition, and clinical care to create improved behavioral interventions that leverage this …show more content…

Existing studies of health behavior often rely on resource intensive, in-person interventions. However, the broader field has recognized the limitations of these approaches and has increasingly utilized online and mobile techniques. As part of my K award, I am therefore proposing to receive training and mentorship in the use of online and mobile health techniques in behavior change and maintenance. In particular, I will obtain hands-on training at seminars with the mHealth groups at UCSF, conferences, and a training institute from NIH. Specific training goals are to develop competence
