Describe your particular interest in attending UNECOM and any contact you have had with UNECOM students, alumni, faculty or clinicians, admissions counselors, student affairs staff, etc. How did these interactions influence your decision to apply?

I became familiar with UNECOM because my family doctor and my mother, who is also a physician, spoke highly of the school and recommended it to me. Since that time I have discovered that UNECOM is recognized nationally for its primary care training. This is important to me because I hope to practice medicine in the primary care field. The patient-first curriculum is an important aspect of UNECOM that interests me. I believe that an integral part of practicing medicine is connecting with the patient. Having the ability to connect with others coincides with osteopathic medicine’s holistic approach to caring for patients.

This was before we discovered what I was doing and after some testing determined that I am dyslexic. Over the next few years, with the help of a reading specialist, my mother, and countless additional hours of studying we found a study method that worked for me. Schoolwork during those years always felt like a burden. It was frustrating to have to stay inside and spend hours trying to read while my friends were outside playing. When I finally found the learning method that worked best for me, I was relieved. Since that time I have learned to love the things I once hated - reading and school. Persevering through this academic challenge at such a young age has strengthened my work ethic and continues to motivate me to pursue my goals. Throughout middle school, high school, and now college I have accomplished what once seemed like a daunting task.
