From the basement of his small Seattle home, James E. Casey was able to turn a $100 loan from a friend into the billion-dollar freight company we know today as UPS. With a fleet size of over 238 aircraft and deliver to over 220 countries, United Parcel Service is the second largest freight company in the world (UPS, 2015). Since 1907, UPS has proved that by maintaining their core values of customer courtesy, reliability, round-the-clock service, and low rates, has enabled them to be one of the most desirable Fortune 500 (Fortune 500, 2015) companies to work for. The American Messenger Company was founded in 1907 (UPS, 2015) in response to a high demand for a private messenger and delivery service. The word “United” served as a reminder that the company’s operations in each city were part of the same organization; “Parcel” identified the nature of the business, and “Service” indicated what was offered (UPS, 2015). UPS expanded its service during this era not only on the west coat but eventually offered its services on the east coast where they focused on acquiring business from the large retail companies in New York. The increase in business resulted in UPS becoming the first package delivery company to provide air service but due to the lack of volume the service ended that same year.
