Case 1 Name: Mayella/female Place with the case: The girl who said she was raped Summary: Mayella Ewell is called to the witness stand. Unlike her father, who looked like he had prepared for his appearance in court by bathing for the first time in months if not years, Mayella looks like she actually has an ongoing acquaintance with soap and water. Mr. Gilman asks Mayella to describe what happened that night in her own words, but she doesn't answer, so he switches to more specific questions. Her answers are still minimal, so the judge asks her to just tell the court what happened, and she bursts into tears. Judge Taylor tells her that she has no cause for shame or fear, so long as she tells the truth.
They went out and told their stories to audiences throughout the North and in Europe, wrote books, got themselves in newspapers, anything they could do to get the word out (doc. #7) Frederick Douglass, William Wells Brown, and Harriet Beecher Stowe were some people who were famous for writing books influencing many different people’s perspective on slavery. One of the most effective books was Harriet Beecher Stowe’s “Uncle Tom’s Cabin.” Stowe was less threatening to white audiences than were black ex-slaves, and could therefore reach out to more people (doc. #7).
All three of the writers made a connection with the reader by talking about racism/slavery, bravery, and spirituality. Being able to read the work written by former slaves helps the reader understand what was actually going on during that time period and how racism continues to occur in the world today. One of the first black writings I read was, What to the Slave is the Fourth of July (1852), by Frederick Douglass. In this speech, he expresses his feelings towards the famous holiday, the Fourth of July.

She told the people on the jury that she was chucked to the floor, choked, and taken advantage of. But the truth is that Mayella Ewell committed the crime of perjury.

The book Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, is about a girl who was raped and is trying to get through the school year. Melinda has many struggles throughout the school year. The book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is about injustices in The Great Depression from the perspective of a child. In school there should be lessons that are learned during the time that is spent here.
When they arrived there, they had to face with some cruel things: watching Negro and white boys on TV. In the TV screen, people killed and died for a nation. It was terrible and suffered to them. Cruel, brutal, bloody people made the slaves to get into the fear and feel scary about them. At this time, he decided that he have to speak loudly to the world about the face of such cruel manipulation of the poor.
People were not interested in rehashing the cruelties of slavery. Therfore, slave narrative writers took a different route. They focused more on the "resilience, industry and ingenuity" they had gained from their experiences (Criner & Nash 6). They depicted former slaves as productive members of society. They also focused on the persistent racism of the north, showing the struggle was still not over.

The story follows the life of a 5-year old, Scout Finch, and her brother, Jem Finch, being 9-years old. The two children are learning the consequences of racism,while it is damaging their community. In Chapter 11, Harper Lee uses literary elements using conflict,setting,character hoping to develop change and maturing to emphasize that courage needs to be involved in order to acknowledge the different points of view.
The book is about Huck Finn and his adventures with Jim. In the beginning of the book Huck Finn is living with Mrs. Watson. He is tired of having to have manners and being stuck having to check in with her but Tom Sawyer convinces him to stay telling him he has to stay respectable to be in the robbers gang. Huck's father comes back to town and fights to have Huck back with him, even though he is a drunk, because he thinks Huck has money that he will get. His father, Pap, beats him and locks him up and eventually he tried to kill him.
Mark Twain writes his book Huckleberry Finn about a young free-willed, courageous boy who is living in a time when slavery is very legal. Huck Finn lives with two ladies named Widow Douglas and miss Watson, who are sisters. They try to educate Huck on many topics and they focus mainly on trying to civilize Huck. Huck is living with Miss Watson and Widow Douglas because his father “Pap” is an alcoholic and abusive father.
Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote about slavery issues in a book called Uncle Tom’s Cabin. This book led many people to realize how wrong slavery was. Even Lincoln said to Harriet Beecher Stowe, “So you’re the little lady who started this great war”(Naden,2000). These citizens took their stand against slavery and helped end slavery in America once and for all. (Chesnut, Diary
slaves were treated harshly and were not allowed to do or learn many things. . All of these were connected they all led up to slavery and the civil war. Western expansion needed workers to build facilities to expand to the west, and the market revolution needed people to work and make the economy bigger. That's where the slaves came in they did all the heavy lifting, although all of these created problems. Throughout the mid to late 1800s in the United States, The Frederick douglass Narrative and Uncle tom's cabin socially and culturally helped people to support abolition by showing the reality of slavery and how cruel it was, sparking the emotions of americans.
The Reason For Character It is seen throughout history how adults influence their children which determines their character development through their upbringing. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, it shows the upbringing of different children during the 1930s and the influences that their parents and the community around them, bring upon their character. Throughout the novel Atticus tells his children, Jem and Scout, to stand up for what they believe is right and not to follow the crowd if it's against their beliefs, he influences them to stand up for their family and question why others do not believe they are the same as them.
About 59.7 percent of Americans are white, the rest are people of color, hispanic, and other races. In America there are many people and they all have different backgrounds. But soon, the amount of people that are from different places and races will be pretty common. White people will no longer be at the top like a hero. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, black people aren’t treated fairly and go through many injustices.
In their fight against the inhumanity of slavery, the most significant device the abolitionists used were Anti- slavery writings. Through the use of newspapers, pamphlets, poetry, and published sermons, they were able to spread their messages of freedom for all. Examples of famous abolitionist text include, David Walker's Appeal, Frederick Douglass' The North Star and The Liberator, by William Lloyd Garrison. Then you have the slave narratives, which were deemed as personal accounts of what it was like to live in slavery. These slave narratives gave the most powerful accounts that contradicted the flattery statements and claims given by slave owners in concern to slavery.
