In this case, an unconditioned stimulus is a stimulus that produces a response in which no learning was required (i.e. food), and an unconditioned response is an innate reflex that we have (i.e. salivating) (Clark, 2004). When conditioning occurs, a neutral stimulus (a stimulus that does not produce a response) is accompanied by an unconditioned stimulus which then becomes a conditioned stimulus (Clark, 2004). After the conditioning is finished, the conditioned stimulus creates a conditioned response due to the association between the conditioned stimulus and unconditioned stimulus (Clark, 2004).
