Unschooling Should Not Be Taught In Schools Research Paper

When most people hear the word school or education, they think of children gathered together in classrooms to learn about basic subjects, like math, reading, science, etc; however, for Ben Hewitt, that is not the case. Hewitt’s idea of school is much different, so much that it is called “unschooling”, the complete opposite of what most people believe education and schooling is. In a sense, unschooling is not just not going to school, and it is not the same as homeschooling. Unschooling is quite different, it allows children to be creative in their own environment without a constant pressure to pass or get straight A’s. Children stay at home, and do not attend school. They do spend some time on school work, but only a couple of hours. Most of their education and learning is done on their own, especially for Hewitt’s kids. They are able to play and work on the farm while learning basic life skills that other children are not taught in school. Unschooling may sound like a better environment for kids, but Hewitt puts it like this, “unschooling isn’t merely an educational choice, it’s a lifestyle choice” (Hewitt 3). Unschooling can not be done everywhere. Luckily for Hewitt, he and his family live on a farm, making it much easier to use unschooling for his kids. Although unschooling and homeschooling sound like the same thing, they are actually quite different. Homeschooling usually involves more religious aspects, while unschooling does not. Parents teach their children the necessary topics, while also teaching them about their religion. He himself was a high school dropout. When he first heard of this new wave of education, he was blown away. This is how he wished his school experience was. A great concept of unschooling, is the fact that there is no pressure for the kids to be a certain way. They do not have pressure from other kids or teachers, and there is no right or wrong answer. Children are allowed to learn on their own and are able to blossom into their true self without outside influences that regular school usually causes. Without these outside forces, children are more likely to succeed, and less likely to dropout, making unschooling the answer to these problems.
