INTRODUCTION: This incident involved the arrest of Suspect Gerardo Jimenez for violation of a court order. The suspect was aware of the restraining order and had been given proof of service. LOCATION DESCRIPTION: The violation occurred at the victim’s residence located at 655 N. Lake Avenue.
An officer is working for the public helping to protect and to help keep everyone safe from danger. The public does not work as an officer because they are not trained or are aware of how the job works. When misusing your power this takes an effect on the public and how they will function around the police. You want the public to feel welcome and that they feel safe knowing that there is an officer around. Police that are leaving horrible impressions on the public is what ruins the relationship between the people and officers.
Officers and detectives make mistakes, but in the case of Calvin Buari, it cost him 22 years of his life. There are a multitude of different types of mistakes an officer can make, but the ones shown in the podcast were mistakes of the heart– which occur when an officer makes a decision knowing at the time they take the action that it is wrong (“Police Errors Are Opportunities to Build Trust.”). So in order to prevent these types of mistakes, officers need to understand what is expected of them with clear expectations and reinforcement. Working in the field of law enforcement and being ethically sound is important. It is important within our professional career that we are able to maintain a standard that doesn’t cross any ethical lines. Even in our academic we have to hold ourselves to an ethical standard, because we are trusted to do what is right. If we violate the academic integrity it put a mark on our ability to be trusted. No one sees it but it happens. Police officers are characterized as enforcers with actions of tyranny and usurpations, to hold our rights or enforce power wrongfully. No one likes no one.
This issue is yet to be solved even though it has been a known problem since long ago. In many cities all over the country, officers are abusing their authority and most of the time they will never even be investigated and when they are it is always a very mild punishment compared to if a regular citizen would have done the same thing. Law enforcement officers carry guns, they are given special privileges and hold a lot of responsibility. Police officers are trusted and expected to respect laws and society at all times. Taking all of this into consideration police officers do in fact break laws quite often.

While it can be interpreted as standing for ones beliefs, a police officer must uphold a high moral code in accordance to the society which is being served. The ethics to which police officers holds themselves, must include the character traits demonstrated in personal life, in addition to operating as public servants. If an officer is deemed untrustworthy at home, they cannot be trusted to work legally within the police department. Honesty within policing is just as important, where failing to admit a mistake can weaken a reputation and call previous cases into question. Although these traits can be trained into an individual, integrity must be developed personally before it can be applied
Both individual officers and law enforcement agencies should be held to account for their actions. Accountability includes both what the police do and how they perform. According to Petter Gottschalk Agency-level accountability involves the performance of law enforcement agencies with respect to controlling crime, disorder, and providing services to the public. It is easy to learn about a subject from a book, but it is an entirely different matter to learn about a subject through real life experience. I hope to learn how to serve and protect while implementing the law correctly, especially in today’s world when the level of support for police officers is very low and the level of misconduct cases concerning the police are very high. It is not easy to know what to do in every situation, especially when some reactions are needed with very little or no time to think about. It is one thing to hear about a crime happening and the response that would be best to give, and another thing to need
“When a terrible crime has occurred, the public may demand that the police solve it ‘no matter what they have to do,’ and so there is pressure to use unnecessary force” (Wilson, Police Ethics). Finally, police officers should always have a positive response to a negative incident. “They can learn from incidents of police misconduct and take steps to correct the policies and practices that allow misconduct to occur.” (Walker, Policing the Police).
‘’Most officers enter law enforcement with minimal experience in the field or in handling the moral dilemmas that officers typically encounter. They learn how to perform their jobs, as well as recognize the organizational norms, values, and culture, from their peers and supervisors. While supervisors provide direct, formal reinforcement, officers’ peers offer friendship and informal rewards that, in many cases, hold greater influence than official recognition from the agency’’ (Fitch, 2011). Officers who come across situations where they are unsure what is morally and ethically best to do often turn to their peers for assurance and guidance. Good ethical behavior can easily be influenced by officers and those in law enforcement.
