World War Two was the deadliest war in human history, costing the lives of estimated 70 million (an estimated 3% of the worlds population at that time) combat personnel and civilians. Though the Second World War started in September of 1939, The United States of America did not join until December 7, 1941 (the day Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Japanese). Even though America started in the war 3 years late, it was not spared from the loss of many soldiers. It is estimated that the number of soldiers killed, fighting for the U.S, is around 407,000. This view shows many of the defenses on the beach which include: "Czech hedgehogs," mined stakes, and log obstacles. This view also shows pillboxes, machine gun emplacements, and heavy gun emplacements on the cliff. This scene then shows many soldiers rushing to get up the beach and taking cover behind the beach defenses, but it also shows the many dead and wounded laying on the beach. After the many losses the soldiers finally make it to the sea wall which has a lot of barbed wire on top of it and on the other side of it. This starts scene 3 called "Rallying." In this scene the soldiers are held up against the sea wall while taking large amounts of enemy fire. Soon, enough of them get to the wall and they try to get through the barbed wire by using explosives called a Bangalore. They succeed in destroying the barbed wire, but at that very same time the scene shows Germans setting up a machine gun to stop the American soldiers from getting up the cliff. This then starts the forth scene called "Breakthrough." In this scene the movie shows the soldiers taking cover behind a bunker at the bottom of the cliff, while at the same time it shows them taking fire from the German machine gun.
