A Career in Volcanology

The career paths in Earth Science seems endless, but 1 career catches the eye of many young earth scientists. This career path is in demand and is already making an impact on what is known to be true about volcanoes and how they behave. This field is called Volcanology, but the scientists who research it are called Volcanologists. This career, like many others, requires some prerequisites and knowledge that normal people would not normally have. In this short article, all the degrees, experience, and a basic job description for those interested will be described in great detail. Volcanologist study all sorts of volcanoes, active or dormant. Study in this field leads to discoveries on how volcanoes are formed along …show more content…

To break down the research that is conducted, there are different types of volcanologist that exists. A physical volcanologist are the ones who make the predictions and collect data for when and how volcanoes erupt (¨How do I become a Volcanologist? OSU 1). A quote sums up the general finding of a Physical volcanologist, “ Collecting this data is very time-consuming. Mapping of the distribution of the rocks that make up the volcano, as well as chemical and dating analyses of the samples, leads scientists to information concerning the volcano's past.” (OSU1). So basically, this type of volcanologist studies a volcanoes present, future, and past for the safety of the people around it. As for the second type of data collector, there is a geochemist. “Geochemists deal with the makeup of the Earth as well as volcanic products, such as emitted gases (OSU1).” Based off this information, these individuals collect information in the aftermath or beginning or an eruption. Seeing what comes from the inside, whether is be the molten lava or the ash clouds they are on the front lines for it all. For the third researcher in this field, a geodesist mainly looks around the sight of the blast for changes in the geological make up around it. (OSU1). And finally, the fourth type of researcher in this field is the geophysicist. “Geophysicists mainly deals with volcanic seismicity, gravity and …show more content…

While it may seem like the only knowledge they have to have is in that field, they need to know and understand aspects of other sciences in geology as well. They are very much connected with seismologists is studying the earthquakes and plate movements around the volcanoes (OSU1). These scientists can also be related to branches of environmental sciences because many of them are studying for the benefit of human endeavours, and are looking for solutions or better outcomes from volcano blasts(OSU1). They also need to use tools and measurements that might not be directly related to their
