May 31, 2002 was the day when I encountered weather violent enough to raze my favorite childhood amusement park ride to the ground, killing a woman beneath the wreckage. This tempest’s strength was both fearsome and fascinating, and I now understand it through studying meteorology. You are still young with a long future ahead of you, and I know that you would excel in the field of meteorology, just as I have begun to, with my research on ice crystal growth. Here is why you should consider meteorology as your future career, based on your personality, skills, and future education.

Since meteorology embodies the study of weather, a fixation on it is a necessity. You certainly invest your interest in the weather through various seasons. Nobody enjoys the snow more than you, nor do you mind the cold. Also, you fear thunderstorms, but understanding them can dissipate that fear. With your curiosity, fascination, intelligence, communication, and attention to weather, you already have the mind of a meteorologist.

Careers
Meteorology divides into a broad spectrum of career paths. Though, by investigating the meteorology major options that are offered here at Penn State, which are Atmospheric Sciences, Environmental Meteorology, General, Weather Forecasting and Communications, and Weather Risk Management, we see that numerous ways to specialize exist. Job fields range from daily forecasting, to research, to chasing storms, and more.

Education
Different levels of education invite different types of jobs in meteorology. Most employment in meteorology requires a bachelor’s of science degree. However, according to Dr. Jerry Harrington, the professor overseeing my research, a master’s degree in meteorology can open the door to higher pay and a multitude of sciences unrelated to the field, particularly in the private sector with occupations ranging from oceanography to business. You have the curiosity, fascination, smarts, people-skills, and vested interest in the weather to fit the job. To enter the field, though, you would need a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and/or a doctorate, depending on what part of the vast field you wish to target. Also, even if you decide to turn your back on meteorology part of the way through, the degree can conveniently become geared towards a different science. Once you receive your degree, you can enter a choice of occupations. Though you may not enjoy the thought of the travel that meteorology requires, it will grow on you. Furthermore, you already have the ability to alter your sleep cycle at the drop of a hat, which is ideal for the forecasting industry.
