BOOM! There’s a tornado, and you are in your basement listening to the weather on TV. The person you are listening to on the tv is the meteorologist who is telling you everything you need to know about the bad storm. A meteorologist is someone who studies and forecasts the weather. I chose this person’s career because I have been interested in weather for most of my life. Public speaking is something that I have always been good at so this job would fit me really well.
When becoming a meteorologist, people must go through a certain amount of education. The amount of education necessary to be a meteorologist is at least a Bachelor’s Degree (Learn.org, n.d.). The Bachelor’s Degree must include 24 hours in meteorology and atmospheric science (National Weather Service, n.d.). Required classes to take in college are a lot of math classes, physics, physical science, and usually some atmospheric sciences (Learn.org, n.d.). There are major responsibilities of a meteorologist. These include having to make their own graphics so they are able to forecast, they have to keep up with their social media to keep people up to date with the weather, and being responsible for having everything ready for the show and the meeting they might have. Some skills that are needed when being a meteorologist are good communication skills, and knowing the basics of weather (K. Melvin, personal communication, January 23, 2023).
