Through volunteering, I hoped to achieve some short term and long term goals, based on strengths and areas for development from my experience. These goals were set out using the SMART method, which enabled me to set out realistic goals to find ways to meet the desired goals (Day and Tosey, 2011) and thus helping me to take control of my experience in order to meet the long term goals. As a volunteer, I hoped to achieve and develop on various skills and knowledge required to get into a teaching job, develop social capital to increase professional networks, to find out the needs of children and develop further and to support the literacy development of young children (Rochester, 2012). The development of social and human capital becomes significant to the understanding of volunteering and the advantages it brings for an individual. Paine et al (2013) refers to human capital as skills, knowledge and ability desirable for economic advantages.
