Teaching Philosophy Statement

The course I wish to apply for is teaching, to be more specific Secondary Education. What about working in the field of education interests me, you may wonder? My wish in training to become a teacher is to help the next generation of students towards a brighter future through their studies and school, helping them learn not only about the subject I will be teaching them, but about themselves as well. I hope that by becoming a teacher I am able to positively influence a student’s life so that they can flourish and grow in all of their various capacities. I believe that I am an ideal candidate for the course as I have good experience in working with students and educating them on various topics in situations. Not only am I an avid reader of fiction, I also take pleasure in reading non-fiction – such as research journals on topics I find interesting. I have a great appreciation for the texts I read, and find that I take great inspiration from them when writing my own stories.

Film also stands out as a subject in which I am able to immerse myself in learning all I can about as I have shown great aptitude towards learning about the various shot types, variants in angles and lighting. I am also ever-improving in my skill to identify key themes within films and their external influences from studios as well as the social and political climate surrounding the release of the film.

I am currently volunteering at McLean Primary School in order to see whether or not I am suited to teaching in a classroom environment. During my volunteering I assist the teacher in ensuring that the students are working and behaving at a high standard, and am given tasks such as assisting the children in learning from ‘word walls’ to improve their pronunciation and vocabulary. On occasion I am allotted a small time in the day wherein I teach the children about interesting topics concerning the culture of other countries – which I am able to get them to partake in a discussions with me about it. For 6 months, I volunteered in our school library, assisting the librarian in organising the shelves of books, which helped improve my already excellent organizational skills, and finding the correct shelf for each returned book and ensuring everything is in clean and succinct order. I was a member of my school’s comic book club during its brief run time in which I improved my teamwork skills by working with my fellow students to create a comic book, of which I was the head writer. I was also for a time a member of the school’s debate club in which we engaged in articulated, well-researched arguments on various current or popular topics.

Inside of school, I have also assisted teachers in various ways. During a visiting day to the high school for the parents of primary school students, I volunteered to give several groups of them a talk about the different languages that their children would be able to learn in our school’s languages department, which allowed me to utilise my clear speaking voice and presentational
