Have you ever read about someone who was very determined? I have, and his name is Walt Disney. Walt never had it easy in life. He often struggled with money, had people doubting him, and had many failures. Despite all of this, he was able to stay focused. Walt Disney shows great determination as we see in his accomplishments.
Walt was determined to make a living doing what he loved. When he was sixteen, he went to France to join the Red Cross. He covered the ambulances he drove with cartoons (Walt Disney Web). When he came home from the war, he told his parents he wanted to create cartoons (Brown 8). Walt’s brother, Roy, and Walt’s mother encouraged him to follow his dreams (Walt Disney Web). He was originally going to name the mouse Mortimer, but his wife, Lily, liked the name Mickey. Walt’s first Mickey Mouse cartoon was a series called Steamboat Willie. This was the first cartoon that looked and sounded like it was actually talking (Brown 13). Walt, wanting Mickey Mouse to be perfect, hired actors, special equipment, and even hired an orchestra for the music. Walt ended up using his own voice for Mickey Mouse. After Mickey Mouse, he created Minnie, Goofy, Pluto, and Donald Duck. (Simon 22).
Walt was determined to find an even bigger way to entertain people (Simon 36). In 1952, Walt decided to build an amusement park. He never liked the run-down old parks (Brown 18). He wanted to create a clean park that would be filled with wonder, adventure, and magic. People thought that he was crazy, but he did not care. The rides kept breaking down and people stood in line for hours, but Walt never stopped fixing and improving Disneyland (Brown 19). “The way I see it,” said Walt, “Disneyland will never be finished.
