How Great Was Alexander the Great? Alexander the Great was the son of Phillip II who was assassinated after conquering the Greeks. Alexander became king at the age of 20 and right away began to expand. He began by crushing a Greek revolt in Thebes and gained the respect from the rest of the Greeks not to rebel.
Throughout history, there has been great military leaders come and go. Although, one of the most well-known conquerors is Alexander the Great. Many people thought he was a good leader and a good king. However, the people he conquered think otherwise. The people who supported him say he was compassionate towards others.
He was not great because he didn’t show concern for others, leadership, or intelligence. Alexander the Great was not the best because of his mass amounts of murder, not much care for his soldiers, and his poor ability to lead. The first reason Alexander the Great is not amazing because of the mass amount of murder he committed. One example is during the battle at Tyre, once Alexander’s army broke into the city they went on a ferocious killing spree (Doc C). Alexander had ordered anyone that was not inside the temple to be slain and he killed seven thousand Tyrians.
He was determined to uphold his fathers dream and take control of Persia. Alexander was considered strategic in his battles and wasn’t scared to go first before his army into war. His appreciation and sympathy for religion and his troops is what makes him such a heroic leader. By these
Alexander would have been a hero would he have lived twice his age. Plutarch notes that Alexander tamed Bucephalus a horse that Philoneicus gave his father as a present by and thought it was wild and untameable. Ideally, the single act indicated that Alexander had the skill of handling issues that most people think cannot be contained and this would have made him a hero (Source 1). Quintus indicates that the talk between Darius III and an Athenian exile indicates how magnificent the Macedonian army was under Alexander the Great.
(Green, document C). Alexander may have just destroyed a city for his empire, but he showed concern by sparing the lives of those who took refuge. This proves that Alexander shows concern because the least he could do in the situation was make sure the victims were okay, and he did that. He spared the lives of the victims who took refuge. Clearly, there are reasons Alexander could be considered not great, but he shows outstanding qualities that prove
In addition, in the Legend of the Hat Band, he rewarded an innocent person who had done a service to him by killing him, showing that he relied so much on the legends that he was willing to kill a loyal soldier because it was thought that he might be a threat. He cared so much about legends that he was willing to sacrifice one of his own men. This does not seem like the act of someone ethical or wise as a great leader should be. A third reason that Alexander should not be considered great is that he used brutal methods to conquer land.
Without their trust, Alexander would not have achieved as much as he did. These examples show that Alexander was great because they provided insight into what Alexander achieved. He had to work hard to gain the people’s trust. It all paid off when he was able to say that he was the greatest leader of his time. Today, everyone wants a trustworthy leader.
“ I think a hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure spite of overwhelming obstacles” Christopher Reeve. Heroes usually have super powers and are constantly saving people. But it takes much more traits than this to be classified as an epic hero. Some characteristics of an epic hero are supernatural help, leaving on a journey in which proves himself, and they are sometimes honored after death. In The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus shows many traits of an epic hero.
Another reason why he was a villain because he killed members of his family so that he would become the ultimate successor to the throne. This should never be how a king becomes the ruler of his kingdom, ever. Even though I believe that Alexander the Great is a villain, others may think he was a hero. They may think that because he had conquered so many other nations.
Alexander the great was a Macedonian king who had a massive amount of land at his disposal. He is considered great because he pulled together a large group of military officials so strong it appeared as if he would never be stopped. He was; however, stopped, but he is still wrongly considered great. Alexander the great was not great because he battled mercilessly, stole the riches of the places he conquered for himself, and he had a disregard for the cultures of others.
Glorious men have graced the earth and have left significant impressions on the following generations. Alexander the Great suits that profile like none other. As arguably one of the most influential military leaders in history, Alexander conquered the majority of the known world, including large-scale empires such as the Persian. Succeeding his father, Philip II, to the throne at the age of 20, Alexander commanded an already skilled military, which he schooled further in the beginning of his reign. Even militarily significant empires had no chance against Alexander 's military brilliance and so he constructed one of the largest empires in history.
Alexander was fearless of what other leaders could have done to him and his men, he was so fearless he even stood on the front line with his men, unlike today when the leaders sit back in safe zones while their men die for their
