When people age, often they are told to stop doing activities that they cared about in their youth. Age is just a number, which therefore does not mean life automatically comes to a sudden halt. Elders have more knowledge and understanding of the world than younger people do. In the novel Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen, Jacob, the main character, is at his last stages of his life but still wants to work at the circus where he grew up. Sara Gruen shows the readers how much Jacob loves the circus, why he wants his last days to be at one, and how old age does not stop him.

In the beginning of the book, Jacob is a 23 year-old man, studying at Cornell University. During his final exams, he finds out his parents have died in a car accident. Jacob
