Tangerine Constructed Response In the book “Tangerine” the main character, Paul Fisher, shares many differences and similarities to his mother, Mrs. Fisher. They sometimes show a different way of looking at things and they, at times, share the same reaction. An example of a difference would be, “Today she said, “Look at the mailbox on that Tudor. That’s not a Tudor-style mailbox.”
The book Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen has many interesting characters, themes and has many ups and downs such as the death of Jacobs parents, rendering him lost and unsure what steps he needs to take in order to find himself again. As well as a battle with his love for a woman he can't have. Jacob is a very well respected character who holds high values and although he struggles due to always helping others, he always puts in a solid effort. The real downfall is with Jacob Jankowski and his love for all life. Although August is the main antagonist who causes many problems for Jacob, if Jacob didn't have these qualities for caring for animals and people, his life would have been much easier throughout the story.

Characters like the hero, villain, anti-hero, and victim play an integral role in the expression of the author’s ideas within the novel. The hero, however, is deemed to be the character who is the protector and enforcer of what is good and just. Despite this, a hero is not immaculate, as his/her decisions can reveal certain flaws.
In the gripping novel Water for Elephants, Sara Gruen establishes the theme of old age crippling humans, causing both physical and emotional hardships. To begin with, Sara Gruen uses the character of Jacob to show the emotional hardships caused by aging. Jacob feels sad and alone in the nursing home, and even begins to lose who he really thinks he is: “Even when I look straight into the milky blue eyes, I can’t find myself anymore” (Gruen, 2007, p. 111). Jacob believes that age has completely changed him as a person, which is a drastic and frightening thought to have.

Although there are many times where he does pick to do the most heroic actions, it is often forced upon him to not do so. Throughout the story, Jacob definitely shows many aspects of being a hero. What really makes Jacob a hero is his strong sense of what is right and what is wrong. Although he is initially confused about whether or not August is a good person, Jacob quickly realizes that August is horrible person, who beats his wife and abuses animals.

In the book a Walk to Water Salva and Nya have problems of getting water, but Salva is based on a real person who went through the challenges of losing his family and the brutal Sudanese war. These are some of the challenges he faced and how he solved them with what he had throughout his life. Through harsh challenges Salvas new foster family was always there for him to support and encourage him through tough times.

It also tells about the lost gothic girl, Anna Cayne, who meets the young high-school aged narrator. Throughout the postcards, a shortwave radio, various CDs, and many other irregular interest.
In the book “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan, it’s about a little girl who is pressured by her mother to become something she doesn’t want to be. Jing- mei , the daughter, is forced to become a prodigy(child actress), by her mother, and she doesn’t want to be one. In the story, Jing- meis’ mother uses allusions such as Shirley Temple to push her into becoming a prodigy. Although at first Jing- mei is excited to become a prodigy, she later realizes its something she just doesn’t enjoy doing. Consequently, the uses of allusion in the story help Jing- mei discover to not be a prodigy and that what her mother wants for her is not always important.
In his story “Hills Like White Elephants”, Ernest Hemingway points out the couple's inability to make the decision: whether to abort the unborn child or not. The reader finds that the story deals with couple's miscommunication through the conversation and the emotions that they express. One can observe that no descriptions are given to the characters, thus, Hemingway creates universal dilemma to focus on the crucial issue. In this way, Hemingway leads the reader to identify with his female character that undergoes a struggle.
