Have you ever sat in science class and wondered about how you, a human, came to be? If you have, you aren’t alone. 60% of students in the United States have had these thoughts, because their teachers don’t teach them about all of their potential origins (Berkman and Plutzer 2011). The beginning of human beings and civilization has many different perspectives, but, in this paper, I will only be focusing on two main topics. The two topics I have researched are creationism or intelligent design and evolution. Merriam Webster defines creationism as “a doctrine or theory holding that matter, the various forms of life, and the world were created by God out of nothing and usually in the way described in Genesis” (Merriam Webster 2016). Whereas, the other side argues that teachers understand and teach both perspectives and eventually let their students decide what they want believe in (Gross 2001). I believe that students need to be provided information from all standpoints and then decide for themselves what they believe to be true. A teacher can’t force one viewpoint over another in the classroom. A teacher’s sole purpose is to give us all the information that they can and encourage their student’s to use critical thinking and their best judgement to create their own beliefs. After thorough investigation, I have discovered that creationism and evolution deserve to be taught in separate classes with equal time given to each perspective. Despite the opposition teachers face from outside the classroom, it is essential that a student’s learning enviornment remains free from bias and serves as place for constructive classroom discussion. In his article titled “Two Perspectives on Teaching Evolution,” he says: “Evolution is the cornerstone of biology and one of the most powerful, exciting, and well-supported laws in modern science. Evolution transforms biology from a collection of unrelated observations and definitions into a coherent discipline that, among other things, helps us understand life’s history and predict answers to important research questions” (Moore 2002).
Evolution allows us to look at serious, scientific theories that could influence the way people interpret the world, and it is important for students to learn about this perspective. With this being said, it is important to acknowledge that this does not make creationism any less
