The American education system provides less resources and inexperienced teachers to schools with low-income students, which are said to be mainly African American and Latino. This continuing inequality has detrimental effects on society. In 2013, only 66 percent of African American graduated on time, while 83 percent of White students finished high school in four years. These facts undermine our core beliefs about education and equality. It also undermines our national ability to be competitive in the global
Before 1962, the only way African-Americans can go to colleges and universities and was through an HBCU (Historically Black Colleges or Universities). Most HBCUs were created after the American Civil War, In 1865 Shaw University was the first HBCU established in the south after the American Civil War, giving higher education to African-Americans. The Higher Education of Act 1965 defined any historically Black college or university established prior to 1964. The principal mission of HBCUs is to educate African-Americans. As of today, there are more than 100 HBCUs across the nation, which represents 3% of the nation’s institutions for higher learning.
This may have true at one point, but dropout rates for minorities has significantly decreased within the past decade. What could have lead to this stereotype could be past generations. These days, poor students see what a lack of education has done to their parents. Of course they are gonna strive for a better life than what their parents provided. Students are finally seeing how valuable an education can be.
Students with a blue-collar background have different universities experiences and Stephens, Fryberg, Markus, Johnson, and Covarrubias, (2012) ask the question on the experiences and how they were more likely to have grown up with different rules the game. A number of these students are First-generation college students. First-Generation college students (a.k.a. First-Gen) is a term that refers to someone whom is the first within their eminent families minus siblings to attend a college/university. First-gen students may face many disadvantages that counterparts (student’s whom eminent family has attended college minus siblings).
Between the years 2004–2005, African-Americans received over 136,122 bachelors degrees compared to The year of 2019, 192,717 black students received bachelor degrees. With this being said 30% consider themselves being minority and African-Americans compromise 14% of college enrollment in the year 2015. Statistical backings indicate that undergraduate enrollment for black students increased by 57% between the year 2000 and 2014, but experienced the lowest six you graduate Rate among their peers. Studies show that discrimination, Micro aggression, and isolation may play factors in drop outs. It is important to know that African-Americans present an exceptional amount of creativity, research ability and perseverance that is needed for every institution.
There are a lot of obstacles students face when trying to college and going to college, sometimes these obstacles involve how counseling and emotional support is out of the question and other reasons are fall into the category of not having too much money to afford school or if they could afford college through scholarships they still struggle with meeting their basic needs. This is a perfect example of institutional racism where youth come from low- income families are place in environments to set to fail. On the other hand, youth that come from affluent families are given opportunities and resources where they are set to be successful in their education. In the graph given it shows that in 2013 in LAUSD only 77percent of seniors graduated; nevertheless, at SMMUSD 93.5 of their seniors graduated. the core problem with current school policies is that they are not applied equally nor they are set up to motivate youth of color to engage
Despite an increase of education scores in the past decade, the United States still trenches behind many countries. Scores found in the Programme for International Student Assessment, the most popular cross sectional test, finds that the United State ranks thirty-eight out of seventy-one countries in test performances of english, math and science literary. But within the country itself contains a deeper issue. The term “achievement gap” is used to describe the polarity between the academic performances of minorities, such as Black and Hispanics, to those of Asians and White students; which are found to be much lower than the latter. Besides test scores, this achievement gap is most apparent in grades and drop-out rates as well.

Next, I attended an inner city Junior High School. I was not zoned there; I was accepted through their gifted program, but this only comprised a small fraction of the school. Coming from a school in a good neighborhood to one that was subpar was a huge leap, I immediately noticed the vast differences in the quality of education. My junior high school was mostly composed of Blacks, Hispanics, and a small percentage of White. In Segregation Prominent in Schools, Study Finds, by Motoko Rich, the statistics show that “43 percent of Latinos and 38 percent of blacks attend schools where fewer than 10 percent of their classmates are white (Motoko, 2012).
According to the 2015 Building a Grad Nation report, low-income high school students are graduating at a rate 15 percentage points behind their more affluent peers. The graduation rate is decreasing because of a problem that is affecting more and more students which is the opportunity gap. The opportunity gap is a barrier that low-income and minority students encounter when wanting to be educationally successful. The opportunity gap enlarges when students are lacking in resources, services, and experiences. This problem is mostly occurring to low-income and minorities students because they don’t have the advantages to afford the same resources as the privileged students.
Although these laws ensure that all students will receive equal education through their primary to secondary schools, the educational gap between wealthy White students and low-income and ethnic minority continue to take place at the richest schools. Two richest U.S. schools have the smallest amount of African-American and Latino youth enrolled in the advanced placement and honors classes. The inequality in education in these school created a diverse group among the students. Students divided themselves by race or ethnicity in school and cafeterias. Each group of students has a strong association with their extracurricular activities and they are limited from participating others ethnic groups' activity.
