The novel “Front Desk” by Kelly Yang follows the experiences of 10 year old Mia, an immigrant from China, and her family who live and work at a motel in the United States. Throughout the story Mia, her family, and her friends face racism in various forms that shows social inequalities. Kelly Yang states these racist actions and injustice in her book through the character of Hank, who faces discrimination due to his skin color. Additionally, the novel explores the theme of discrimination faced by Mia and her family based on their immigrant status.
Abandoning one’s family could be devastating for some people, but for Mattia Pascal, it was a dream. In The Late Mattia Pascal, the main character, Mattia had lost everything from family to family fortunes multiple times. He went from having a large inheritance from his parent’s passing, to losing it all. He was the father of two daughters that passed away within seconds of each other, which occured on the same day as his mother’s passing. After this, Mattia’s remarries and finds that he is miserable in his new life because of his living environment with his wife and demanding mother in law.

The book is an easy read and is refreshing in its approach as a guide for administrators. The author uses cooking metaphors to offer some practical advice on how to be an effective leader. Although the tone of the book is light and funny, it does a good job addressing the serious task that all school principals face, creating a positive and encouraging environment for teachers. As the book emphasizes the teachers are the foundation of the school, unhappy staff will not produce successful students.
