Reading in school is always very stressful and not fun at all. But this year really changed that mindset for me. It made me realize that the saying “don’t judge a book by its cover” has gotten the best of me. I used to just take a look at a book and want to puke. It wasn’t appitizing nor did it look like fun. But then again, most of the times I would read growing up were for assignments for school. It reminded me of a quote from the book Without you, There is no us. It says “Sometimes the longer you are inside a prison, the harder it is to fathom what is possible beyond its walls.” (Kim 137) My prison was to be forced to read books I didn’t want to read. I didn’t think it was possible for me to actually read and enjoy books again. I never realized …show more content…

It was able to show me that when you aren’t forced to do something, you’ll actually want to do it on your own time. This year really opened that view up for me. I never would’ve thought that I could’ve read 8 books in a school year! I’ve never read that much in probably the past 2 years. Which is very sad to think of. I feel like schools are forcing students to read for years. It reminds me of a quote from The Brethren that says “After three years of studying the law, I'm very much aware of how little I know.” (Grisham 112) It reminds me of it because we study and study for years about books and force students to read book that we don’t want to read. Just to know very little about them or the true meaning of books, storytelling. The thought that schools should be pushing kids to read and educate themselves is truly the best way of having kids interested in reading. That experience hasn’t gotten to me until this class. This class showed me that true storytelling doesn’t come from movies, but is found on paper. Whether that be in books, or in scripts. I believe other kids should have the same experience as …show more content…

In the book American Street, the main character, Fabiola, walks into her friends bedroom and says “When she turns on the light, the first thing to greet me are the shelves and shelves of books and more books. With this many books I can make this place my home.” (Zoboi 183) I believe that this is the mindset that we should be installing in our kids. It’s very hard to succeed in this mindset though. The main reason being, that kids now don’t have the motivation to do their work. When you give anyone too much flexability, you lose their motivation. It makes them not want to do the work because they aren’t forced to. There needs to be boundries and in this class, I believe that our boundries were perfect. I loved how you’d come around and check how far we are in our book and how we were liking it. It was definetly a lot esier to talk and explain about the book rather than to type an essay about it. The book talks really helped me get a better understanding of the book and I liked how my group debated different topics. I believe this should be incorperated in other schools. I also believe that schools shouldn’t force kids to read books like The Outsiders or To Kill a Mockingbird. Because lets be real, nobody wanted to read those
