Hook: How many students have had to bear the agony of having to read books that simply just don’t interest them? BG info: When readers can choose the books that interest them, those stories can take them to all sorts of different places. Places they may have seen, or they may not have ever dreamed of seeing. According to a reputable scholastic survey, 78% of students who read frequently (5 days a week) said they had time to read a book of choice during the school day (Ehrenfrued 7). If the majority of students have both a choice of what to read and time during the school day to enjoy those books, then they are much more likely to read more often. If schools want students to read more, why wouldn’t they provide the time, space and options to help students thrive? Body 2=Reason 2: Having choice offers students a greater chance of bonding with their reading. Don’t most people want to enjoy what they read? According to literacy advocate and author Pam Allyn, “You become a lifelong reader when you are able to make choices about the books you read, and when you love the books you read you tend to get better at something you love to do,”
