Louis XIV was known for his belief in an absolute monarchy. Absolute monarchy is defined as having absolute power. He believed that his power came from God himself. Louis was known for his interest in “pleasing” his people. He would give them free things in order to earn their admiration. Of course this did earn him the admiration of his people, because they enjoyed free things. However, it also led his people to believe that they were like the King. They believed that because the King was giving them free things they would be held to the same standard as the king. In the document, “Memoirs,” Louis makes a reference to Machiavelli’s book “The Prince.” The end justifies the means. A great king must be an influence a greater empire then France.
