Samantha Dubyna EN 30 April 17, 2023 To which of the provided texts are you responding? What is the connection between the texts and your response? I am responding to the play Hamlet and the song “Cry, Ophelia.” The connection between the texts and my response relates to feeling hopeless because of separation. Ophelia experienced separation from Hamlet, Polonius, and eventually herself. The singer relates to the feeling of separation and seems to relate to Ophelia. What idea about the prompting texts do you intend to explore, and how does it address the topic? Separation can considerably impact a person’s life and well-being; whether separating from a loved one, a hobby, or a place, different people will respond to separation in other ways. Some may respond with anger or anxiety, and some may grow from it while others do not. For example, in William Shakespeare’s play Hamlet, the character Ophelia experiences multiple instances of separation throughout the play. In my previous school, I relied very heavily on my friends to get me through school; if I was confused, they would have to teach me, and if I was uncomfortable, they would go out of their way to fix whatever it was. Going to a new school and experiencing new things and people helped me develop myself more, so in grade eleven, when I returned to the previous class that I knew, I no longer felt helpless when there was no one to hold my hand through it all. This is similar to the singer in “Cry, Ophelia” because he had to grow as a result of disconnection. Another separation that significantly affects me is not knowing where the people I love are. My family members are notorious for just up and leaving, which stresses me out. I
