Most were viewed as rebellious, misunderstood, and judgemental. The main characters, ‘Greasers’ came from low-class backgrounds and were struggling to fit into society. They were perceived as heavily troublesome and were judged severely on their appearance and social status. The movie and novel show that these teenagers are more capable than adults think. Their negative perception in the movie caused the perception of teenagers to change.
In the song “When You’re Young” by “The Jam,” they sing about how teens are full of youthful energy and rebellious thoughts. One of their lyrics states “...the world is your oyster, but your futures a clam.” This line represents the coming-of-age process and how difficult it can be for teens to grow up and find their true identity. In “Half a Moon” by Renee Watson and “Smokers'' by Tobias Wolff, the authors use the characterization of growing and maturing to show that as teens work to find their identity, they often struggle and make mistakes along the way but eventually realize they must make some changes if they hope to mature.
In Michael Lehmann’s facetious Heathers, various characters display their perspectives on the complications and difficulties of navigating the dynamics of adolescence. The teenage years are known throughout American culture to be some of the most trying times in one’s life. The pressures of fitting in, being popular, and feeling loved can become so important to teens, often close to obsessions. JD is someone who sees the falsehood behind these needs and looks down on those who epitomize them. We live in a society in which conformity is not only encouraged but often rewarded. As my grandfather used to always say, “It’s the [penguin] who is different that gets left out in the cold.” Sure, many try to push the narrative that we ought to lead, and that being divergent is what makes one “special.” But while this may be true in a purely academic sense, socially, those who do not abide by unspoken norms are typically outcast as pariahs; they are considered the “undesirables.” As such, many teenagers change their personality by emulating others in attempt to gain acceptance into certain social cliques.
