Yet, for those that master the implementation of processes and controls which move the organization towards success, the reward can be a world-class organization. In the realm of healthcare, the pinnacle of success has been reached by the Mayo Clinic, America’s number one healthcare facility (The Real Meaning of US Hospital Rankings, 2014). The goal of the organization’s supply and procurement department is to purchase the appropriate item, the right quality as well as quantity of items at the right price as well and at the correct time (Sollish & Semanik, 2012). While many factors play a role in the Mayo Clinic’s success, the organizational benefits of a high performing procurement and supply management department cannot be understated.
