What is your most defining characteristic? Why? I like to think of myself as a combination of open-minded and intellectually curious. I’m never afraid to admit if I do not fully understand something because I know I have the ability to seek out the answer. However, if there’s no concrete answer, then that’s where I’ll be open-minded and accept the situation for what it is. An example of this would be in academic classes like math. There are only so many answers you can give for a subject that deals with logic related to shapes and the science of numbers. For some, that might be doing well in their business. For me, I hope to be content with my life and who I am. I am driven by the knowledge that I should “lean into discomfort” and if I work hard, it will only benefit me. What was your favorite piece of literature we read this year? Why? I really loved all of the poems and short stories we read this year. The works by Langston Hughes and Walt Whitman along with Ta-Nehisi Coates and Bernard Cooper all taught me how much power words can hold. I suppose this lesson is taught in “The Banks of the Vistula.” I never understood the history behind the story (a quick google search could easily fix that for me), but the message that Stasselova shares about the power of a sentence is clear. All of these works demonstrate it. Did your writing improve this year? How? I definitely think it has. This year, I didn’t look at writing as something stressful or something that I had to do. We spent a lot of time doing personal reflections or questions that were open-ended, so instead of feeling like my writing had to be what was expected of me, I was able to just write freely.
