What is Ethics? The term ethics is derived from the Greek words meaning custom or character. In philosophy, ethical behavior is behavior that it good. Most people think about the word ethics and the first thing to come to mind is morals. They question things such as values standards and principles. However, ethics can be a very tricky thing especially when it comes to different societies. The reason being is that not all people have the same standards when it comes to determining what is right and what is wrong. Some things are considered a unacceptable behavior and almost all societies such as stealing and killing. Many things can influence societies’ standards on ethics. Ethics is considered to be perspective and not descriptive. Ethical decision making means following certain well established norms of behavior. The best way to differentiate the norms is to separate ethics from other concepts Six Pillars of Character The six pillars of character are trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. Ethics are standards of right and wrong. However, people do not follow these rules just because they are on a piece of paper. People follow these rules because they have a conscience that let them know what the right and wrong thing to do is. The thing that makes a person do the right thing is the fact that they have ethical values and lives live consistently, at home and at work, in harmony with these six values: 1. Trustworthiness: being honest, acting with integrity, being reliable and exercising loyalty when dealing with others. 2. Respect: all people should be treated with dignity. You do not have to hold everyone in a high esteem but you should treat everyone with respect regardless of their circumstances in life. 3. Responsibility: a responsible person carefully reflects on alternative courses of action using ethical principles. They act diligently and preservers in carrying out moral
