When Was Archimedes A Hero

There are plenty of famous historians. Some get lots of credit and recognition, like Albert Einstein, or Alexander Graham Bell. Others get overlooked, like Jack Kilby, and Nikola Tesla. In fact, most famous people in history tend to get overlooked. In that bunch of people, one stands out. He was born 287 BC, and made great mathematical, and scientific discoveries. His name is Archimedes. Archimedes was a hero, who history viewed as a great inventor, had a unique way of thinking, and influenced powerful minds like Leonardo da Vinci. Archimedes left behind many scrolls of his works. Some of his works survived through time, and some did not. One of them that survived was used by Leonardo da Vinci. He was one of the only people who got …show more content…

On his ‘hero’ side, he discovered many things that we still use today. He made the first pulley, and showed how to make a lever to make life easier. The pulley was first used to open an ancient temple to the goddess Athena. Only Archimedes and his friend, Eratosthenes, were smart enough to operate it. Also, his discoveries in mathematics and hydrostatics were amazing. On his villain side, he angered the romans by protecting his people over an extended 3-year siege. Many romans died due to his massive war machines, which include the Archimedes claw, the steam cannon, and the Archimedes death ray. This struck fear into the romans, and caused them to extend the siege. Their leader, Marcellus, respected him, and after finally invading Syracuse, asked for a soldier to escort him to his quarters. The soldier found him and asked Archimedes to come. Archimedes, not knowing that Syracuse had fallen, said he needed to finish an equation that he was working on. The soldier got angry, and struck him down. Marcellus was furious, and ordered the soldier to be hanged. He put Archimedes to rest by putting a circle inside a cylinder on his tombstone, because he (Archimedes) thought that that had been his greatest accomplishment. Now, history has told you their side, but what about people in his …show more content…

His equations helped us out with the science of hydrostatics. He also found a version of π that can be used in equations. He created war machines to protect his people. He was like the sniper on a battlefield, creating ways to cut down his enemies before they knew what was going on. The king invited him to live in his palace. Heck, the only reason that Syracuse was invaded was because they were betrayed by one of their own, not because Rome had the brains to do it themselves. Rome took advantage, and invaded Syracuse because they were afraid that if they waited, Archimedes might come up with another clever way to kill them. Once again, Archimedes struck fear into them using his mind, which let history make their claim about him, but they also had to look at who he was able to inspire with his smart, and creative inventions. Archimedes is not a name mentioned much in history. But this paper has almost everything about him, from what he did, to what he made, to how he was killed. He was a great man who should have more credit for everything he was involved in. He is part of the reason we are still alive, and have not died out. Rest in peace Archimedes, and thank you, for advancing our
