Introduction

Research Question:
Which starch plant produces the most ethanol?

Hypothesis:
Potatoes will produce the most ethanol.

Research Aim:
To identify which starch plant produces the most ethanol in order to use as an alternative for fossil fuel. To understand the fermentation process and to pinpoint the factors that contribute to the fermentation process.

Motivation:
Most non-renewable resources are running out and is estimated to completely be exhausted in the upcoming fifty years. So if we are able to use an alternative fuel we wouldn’t have to face our current problem of having depleted non-renewable resources. Due to plants being ‘renewable’ and is constantly harvested, there would be an endless supply of ethanol (produces from …show more content…

Ethanol contains a huge amount of energy which can be used for various things such as powering cars and to generate electricity. Due to ethanol being fermented by plants; which are renewable; they would continuously be supplied when harvested and wouldn’t run out.
When ethanol is produced into a fuel, they mix the pure ethanol with gasoline in order to create a biofuel to use in cars. It is a high performance fuel that could be used as an alternative fuel. It reduces pollution from cars, it keeps your engines clean and improves the performance of your vehicle.
Ethanol is the most environmentally beneficial energy source. “It reduces greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 59 percent relative to gasoline, and keeps harmful chemicals like MTBE and benzene out of our air” ( Growth energy, 2010).
The main concern is the fuel used in cars, cars have various types of fuels that they run on, this is called flex fuelled vehicles (ffv). The most popular flex fuelled cars ether run on either ethanol, gasoline or both. This can help reduce the uses of gasoline which will affect the environment positively as it will reduce the carbon footprint.

Ethanol won’t only be used in our vehicles it can be used to generate electricity as
