Dealing with a teenager who has autism as a parent is not easy, the audience gets to see how it works out for Christopher and his family. The story presents a boy, Christopher Boone, that stumbles upon a dead dog and that leads to him finding hidden secrets by his father and mother. Mark Haddon is the author of the Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night Time, a novel in which two parents face daily challenges to show affection to their son. Throughout the book, the reader is given a point of view of how someone with this disability thinks, and his mother and father’s experience of taking care of him.

Mr.Boone takes responsibility for Christopher, mostly through the whole book. Mr.Boone states, “And father said, I’m going to see him. And if you try to stop me-”(pg 197). MrBoone’s point here is that no one or nothing will stop him from seeing his son and apologizing for his actions. It is important to realize the things Ed is willing to do to get his son's trust and confidence back. Ed says, “ Then he said, I did it for your good, Christopher. Honestly, I did. I never meant to lie. I just thought … I just thought it was better if you didn’t know… that. that… I didn’t mean to… I was going to show them to you when you got older.” ( Pg 114). Basically, Mr.Boone is saying that he didn’t mean to lie or hide the letters but he did it to protect Christopher’s feelings. The important point to consider here is that Ed is willing to do anything to protect his son from any type of harm. Therefore, his father truly feels regret and is touched for losing their …show more content…
His disability doesn’t stop him from doing things others believe he can’t do. Christopher states, “ I am going to prove that I’m not stupid. Next month I’m going to take my A level in maths and I’m going to get an A grade.” (Pg 214). Interpreting the quote above helps the audience by developing the fact that he wants to see how smart he is in math. This meant that he wasn’t scared to take a challenge to prove that he knew what he was smart enough. Christopher says, “ I had to get out of the house. Father had murdered Wellington. That meant that he could murder me, because I couldn’t trust , even though he had said ‘Trust Me’, because he had told a lie about a big thing.”(Pg 122). In other words, Christopher believes he was in danger after getting lied to by his father. With this it is portrayed how his mind thinks and processes things in another way. All in all, Christopher is improving on himself through his
which unfortunately led him to reject and avoid any type of close relationships that he had made on his journey as Christopher did not want them to interfere with his decision to travel to Alaska on his own terms, as well as becoming completely concerned for his safety and welfare, which he almost failed to do so when he met an older man named Ron who deeply cared and loved Chrisopher as he wanted to adopt him into his family. Along the way Christopher starts to show his hatred towards authority as he goes on and shows multiple ways on how he avoided having to follow the law by breaking a lot of safety awareness laws which makes him an idiot as he risked his entire life and made it very difficult for others to come to his aid incase of an
He says, "And I know I can do this because I went to London on my own and because I solved the mystery of Who killed Wellington? And I found my mother and I was brave and I wrote a book and that means I could do anything. As a result of Christopher overcoming his fears and solving his internal conflict Christopher develops into a much more confident and capable version of himself.
After realizing what a negative impact he had on these people’s lives, he started being friendly with them and decided to find out where Christopher was, so he could level everything out with him. Overall, finding out the truth may come with many obstacles, but it is important to overcome them.
The quote also shows that his father is not going to let people marginalize or walk all over Christopher. “I want to see my son,” and “ why the hell is he locked up?” and “ of course, I'm bloody angry.” ( Haddon 16) this is another example of how Christopher's father Ed Boone Wanted to help and be a good parent for Christopher by being there for him when he was at the police station instead of yelling at Christopher or Blaming him for getting put in a holding cell for punching an officer. This shows how, even though Ed Boone did many things that would be considered things that a bad person
Raising a child like Christopher is very difficult. Christopher often disappears in the middle of the night to go out for walks and quickly becomes overwhelmed in new environments. For the better well-being of Christopher, Ed tends to be very overprotective of him. An example of this is shown when Christopher wants to do detective work to find out who killed Wellington. This idea suggests that Christopher has to talk to strangers which he is not comfortable with.
Self) to develop the coming-of-age theme to explain how Christopher becomes more independent as the novel continues. For example, when he plans on living with his mother when he thinks his father will kill him. “I looked up and saw him staring through the bars at me. I had to get out of the house. Father had murdered Wellington.
Christopher’s parents, Ed Boone and Judy Boone, are very important people in Christopher’s life, as well as important characters in this novel. They play a big part in his life, he wouldn’t be the kind of person he is without their constant lectures and care that they provide. Both, the mother and the father, love and care for Christopher. “She had sent me lots of love and had my Get Well card on the table beside her bed.” Before his mother passed away, and even during her slow death, Judy continued to send love to her son.
In conclusion, Ed Boone loved his son so much that words could not describe it. He didn’t mean to upset Christopher he was just trying to protect him, and to him if it meant lying to his son he took the chance cause one thing I learned about Ed Boone is that he would do anything for his son and everything that happened was because he was scared of losing Christopher and in the end he almost did. However he couldn 't let that happen, Ed was not going to let go years of becoming familiar with and taking care of Christopher and has started restoring his relationship with his
In the novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon, Christopher became influenced by his legal rights as a result of his father, as he doesn’t proceed to the best interests of his child, and safety in the place that they consider home. Christopher’s father knows that he doesn’t wish to be lied to, yet he lied to Christopher regarding how his mother died. The letters from his mother were hidden, but Christopher finds out, and writes, “I was really frightened” (Haddon 122). Later, Christopher’s father tries to reason with him, and says that he was “going to show them when you were older” (Haddon 114).
When Christopher finds out that his father killed Wellington and hid the truth about his mom, Christopher's conscience tells him that he must leave to live with his mother. "I had to get out of the house. Father had murdered Wellington. That meant he could murder me, because I couldn't trust him, even though he said, "Trust me," because he had told a lie about a big thing" (122 Haddon). This quote is significant because it shows that Christopher's journey begins as a result of a traumatic experience.
In the novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time (CIDN) by Mark Haddon, Christopher Boone is impacted by child abuse because both his parents has been physically abusing and emotionally abusing him. The most prominent form of abuse in CIDN is when Father grabbed Christopher,”But Father interrupted me and grabbed hold of my arm really hard… but Father didn’t let go and he was shouting” (Haddon 82). This showcases Ed Boone’s physical abuse towards Christopher, in which Christopher voices his discomfort and has started fighting back.
Christopher was not your average person at all. His ways of processing, accomplishing, and analyzing situations and life was very risky. Since Chris was a far different person than your average human being. He had many different characteristics to himself. McCandless’ non-traditional views of life led him to misjudge the outcome
He causes Christopher to act secretively, as he does not explain what was wrong in the situation. This happened when Christopher was inquiring about Wellington- his father responds by telling him to ‘Not go around sticking your ******* nose in other people’s business’ (82), but not fully elaborating on how so. This leaves Christopher to try testing a gray area, especially since he is autistic and will take everything in a literal manner.
Christopher was already aware that his mother had left and had been struggling with the emotional consequences of her absence. Lying to him only served to further confuse and distress him, as he struggled to reconcile the lie with his own experiences. Moreover, Christopher's father's lie was motivated by his own self-interest. He lied to protect himself from Christopher's rejection and to avoid having to face the difficult emotions associated with his wife's abandonment.
Though, when the killing of the neighbour's dog, Wellington occurs, Christopher's carefully constructive universe is threatened. Christopher's father, Ed Boone's temper is proven to have caused him to murder the dog and also lie to his son about his mother. When Ed confesses his crimes to Christopher, he refers to his temper metaphorically as "when that red mist comes down …". Haddon's realistic portrayal of family is shown to be destroyed as Ed's temper is what is undoing his relationship with Christopher. Haddon’s portrayal of Ed Boone allows him to represent interesting ideas about the family unit.
