In the novel Trash, written by Andy Mulligan, one of the most important characters is Gardo. Gardo is an important character because he is supportive like an older brother to Raphael and has a tenacious grip when tough challenges oppose him and he is also serious with everything that encounters him which means that he doesn’t fool around. Gardo is important because he is supportive like an older brother to Raphael. He is always there for Raphael especially when he got a sudden fright when he was getting arrested. An example from the book that shows Gardo’s support for Raphael was when they were both sifting through rubbish. “Gardo’s my partner, and we always stick together. He looks after me”. This shows that Gardo is determined to care for his friend and that he portrays a brotherly figure. Gardo’s support to Raphael shows the reader to stay close around their friends because they will always need you. Above all the problems that Gardo has in life, he still enjoys working with people as a team. Others around the world have a lot of friends which they sometimes boss around unlike Gardo. This is shown when Gardo was wary of the people in his surroundings and he did not give up easily. A moment from the book showing Gardo’s tenacious grip on his challenges is “ ‘We’ve got this far,’ said Gardo, getting angry like he does. ‘There must be something!’ ”. This quote shows that Gardo did not want to let go of his firm hold and that he wanted to keep on going. In addition, this reminds the reader to be determined and to not give up easily.
