His name is Kanye West, a name which is embedded in the roots of American hip-hop in the early 2000s. He has innovated the entirety of a genre due to his personality and passion that echoed throughout the early 2000s. In the early 2000s, violent and derogatory hip-hop gripped America and hip-hop culture until Kanye completely flipped the scene on his head with his groundbreaking records and persona. On Late Registration he talks more about his status and dealing with his impact on hip-hop. In his song ‘Touch the Sky’, Kanye writes “After I got my advance I just wanted to shine, Jay's favorite line is “dawg in due time” now he looks at me like “dang dawg you where I am” a hip-hop legend”(West 1). For context, Jay-Z was the biggest rapper of the early 2000s, he and Kanye were great friends, and he effectively took Jay's top spot as the hip-hop king. The line “dawg in due time” is Jay saying that one Kanye will eventually be at the relative same status as him but the next line “Dang dawg you were I am” is Jay and everyone is shocked that Kanye changed the status of himself and Jay almost overnight. In the early 2000s, it was insane that anyone could be bigger than Jay-Z and Kanye would by expressing himself through his music and changing his status.
