After reading this week’s assigned readings, I chose to write about Whole Foods Markets and their dedication to corporate and social responsibility. There is an increased emphasis on CSR and how different organizations are using their business to make an impact in the local community and globally.
Whole Foods is the first certified organic grocery chain in America and of the leading retailers of organic and natural foods. They began in 1980 in Austin Texas, but have become more well known in the last 10 years. The heavily market the selling of the most wholesome and natural foods available. They have a wide selection of products that fall under the “Health Starts Here” nutritional and ingredient standard. The program encompasses in store displays of books, healthy eating centers and staff available to help answer any questions you have on the products.
Whole Foods is also taking steps to end world poverty by selling products with the “Whole Trade Guarantee Seal.” When consumers buy products with this seal, Whole Foods donates 1% of the sales to the Whole Planet Foundation. This foundation is committed to helping wise environmental practices and being a leader in the environment through Green Mission. From 2004-2012, the EPA awarded the Green Mission 7 Green Power awards.
The Local Producer Loan Program is another way Whole foods gives back. This program helps local growers by giving them the money they need to start or sustain their farms. By doing this, it helps the local economy by keeping monies in their pockets and not giving into large corporate greed. It also helps ensure that Whole Foods has the freshest and most organic produce possible to sell in their
